Hi everyone
The grand finale movie which I was looking forward to see with like very high impatience level has finally came last week, so naturally I had to see it for myself. Well, there's whole lot to say about this and the review will include spoilers so if you haven't seen ther movie yet, I'd recommend not reading it until you do. Read with caution.
First things first. Back then in 2015, when the second Avengers movie came out I made a poll which Avenger is your favourite one. My vote (at that time it was possible to vote in your own polls) went for Tony Stark which turned out to be one of the less popular choices. But you know what? After watching Engame, I can say with certainty that it was a damn correct choice. Tony Stark/Iron Man from the beginning was portrayed as probably the most unlikable among the Avengers crew due to his tendency toi do banter and sarcastic nature overall. He also seemed like a person who needed to have his own way no matter what. This was best shown in Avengers: Age of Ultron when his stubbornness lead to dire consequences in form of Ultron as well as all damage that fighting him caused. In Cpt. America: Civil War he could be seen as worse of the two team leaders, driven by his consicence but still terribly stubborn, as opposed to seemingly righteous Captain America. As we learn in the end though, the movie can in no way be interpreted in black and white kind of way. Nonetheless, Tony Stark had a prominent role from the very beginning. He ws the first hero introduced by the MCU. The victory in Avengers was arguably mostly due to his effort. In Age of Ultron he had the dream that foreshadowed everything that was going to happen. In Infinity War he tries to atone for his past mistakes by bravely facing all the unfavorable odds and using Thanos's spaceship and following him to his own planet where he faced him in a battle in which he almost died. If that is not an example of impressive character arc, I don't know what is.
This thorough transformation was captured in very much the same way in Endgame. Tony is shown as one who struggles the most from the very beginning. That scene from the trailer may seem seem like unimportant in the movie as a whole but later on it is whon it actually had a lot of meaning. Going back though, Tony is still stubborn and emotionally unstable as we've known him before. Later on, he seems to be the one who first accepted the sad reality and was able to move on. Mostly because he did not lose as much as others. He could still have a family and fairly happy life. So naturally, he is first skeptical when others come out with daredevil proposition on how those who perished because of Thanos could be turned back to life. Eventually though, he changes his mind. The time when he sees a photo with him together with Peter, his pupil is one of the most moving. It changes his mind and incentivizes to action. He is ready to put on stake his happiness or even his life once again. When everything is seemingly lost, the cause needs him. Avengers need him. More than anyone else. Therefore, he comes up with a way how to travel through time properly due to his scientific skill and what was previously impossible is now possible. Avengers can proceed with the plan, regain Infinity Stones and turn the dead back to life. Then he faces Thanos along with Cpt. America and Thor in one of the most epic battles the cinametic universe has ever shown us. And he is the one who ultimately sacrifices his own life to deal Thanos the finishing blow and erase him for good.
The movie is about all Avengers but I would argue that it is about Tony more than about any other character. Because of his transformation, display of true nature and heroism. Rest in peace, Iron Man.
But back to the review itself, the movie can be seen as really long, lasting roughly 3 hours but honestly, in does not feel like any minute is wasted when you watch it. Huge emphasis is put on emotions of all characters. Within more-or-less the first hour it feels like all hope is lost and there's nothing to be done about the fact half of the planet perished. That is, until Scott Lang appears. Right after he showed up in the movie, things suddenly started to add up. Oh yeah, they can now use quantum realm in some kind of way. As it turned out, it was not a contribution of Cpt. Marvel and her superpower but to Ant-Man and power of science. Though, Ant-Man himself would not be able to make things work the way they should and that's where Tony Stark comes into play, as mentioned previously. And the next part is really lovely. References to the past movies. It felt almost like re-experiencing some of the good-old previous movies - Avengers, Capt. America: Thi first Avenger/Winter Soldier, Thor: Dark World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr Strange... as well as Vormir from Infinity War. It truly felt like time machine. In a way. Thor's reunion with his mother was truly moving. It was kind of sad how his life went downhill from that time on. The scene when Tony Stark meets his then younger and still alive father was just as moving. We cheer for Avengers' cause in all of their struggles. The most difficult part belonged to the deadly duo we've known and loved since the first Avengers movie. Hawkeye and Black Widow. Not lovers and not exactly good friends but definitely good comrades. Both facing serious problem at that moment. This scene was really powerful. In the striking contrast with Infinity War where Thanos sacrifices his daughter for his selfish cause, both Hawkeye and Black Widow are willing to selflessly sacrifice themselves so the other one can move forward with the plan. It shows how good essentially they really are. It could be probably easy to predict Clint would be the one to stay alive as he has family while Natasha did not. Nonetheless, her sacrifice was profound. And sad. From that point on, we know she will most likely not return. But her sacrifice was not for naught as the heroes finally gather all 6 stones and can reverse what happened in the IW. You feel satisfied when Hulk snaps his fingers. You know they were successful. Even though what happens next complicates things a lot. In a nutshell Thanos from Guardians of the Galaxy timeine is able to see through Avengers' plan by an accident and uses Nebula who surprisingly serves him as a loyal puppet in order to put his new intentions into action. And this was a big wake-up slap for everyone who claimed that Thanos's cause was 'not fully evil' and 'really just' or other sort of bullshit. No, the guy is rotten to the core and he's always been. When he appears on Earth and destroys Avengers' base, everyone knows the final clash is about to begin. And begin it does. The three firstly introduced and major Avengers face their ultimate opponent. the battle is great. And we can see that Cpt. America is finally worthy enough to wield Mjolnir! What a surprise. In fact, he kind of always has been almost worthy, being righteous and selfless, however there were flaws in his character such as impulsiveness and rashness instead of reason. He was the one who prefered to rush through rather than plan. While Tony Stark could be said to be kind of selfish but reasonable, Steve Rogers was the exact opposite. But until that moment he definitely became more responsible (I'd wager the moment that changed him was the end of the Civil War). It was awesome to see them all cooperate, despite their past discords. At that moment they fight hand in hand. When Thanos summons his army, things start looking bleak. But, soon after that we can see all previously dead Avengers coming back in an epic entry. The come back with a blast. It was one of the most powerful moments in the movie. Heroes and bad guys clash in a great duel. Thanos is as much challenge as before if not more. After Cpt. Marvel destroys Thanos's battleship, Avengers seem to start to have the upper hand. But the battle belons to the one who gets the gauntlet with infinity stones. After a harsh struggle for the gauntlet, Tony Stark finally gets the stones and performs his snap. Death of Thanos is one of the most satisfying things your eyes could ever see. The moment when he and his goons turn into dust was pure epicness. We can see it twice in the movie, however the moment when Thor chops up the sucker's head is not nearly as satifying. It felt like an empty victory at the beginning of the movie. I felt like it can't really end the way it did. And I was not disappointed. It was a great ending to a great battle. A victory truly deserved. Even though I expected it would be Thor killing him again with Stormbreaker, it was actually Iron Man who did it. And it was definitely poignant. His success, his sacrifice, his demise... all so bittersweet. In a way you feel sad he is gone. On the other hand, you feel like it was a victory well won. Which could not happen without sacrifice. So we had Natasha Romanoff and now Tony Stark as casualties of this great victory. However, there were more losses if we take into account characters killed in other ways than through Thanos's snap such as Loki, Heimdall or Vision. Gamora who re-appears is most likely the one from 2014 timeline (whe she was still alive) but the one who was sacrificed in IW remains dead. That would Guardians have her back as a team member without memories from first and second GotG movies. Avengers couldn't really change the past but they definitely changed their presence. Hopefully for good.
The movie is has it all, good dose of humor, excitement, satisfaction, strong emotional stimulation... Despite humble beginning, the movie gains enormous momentum within the next two hours. Truly an ending that could not have been done better. Russo Brothers did a great job for another time, reinforcing me in opinion that they are the best when it comes to directing Marvel movies. They did an awesome job with Infinity War and now they did even better one with Endgame. A sequel not only worthy of its predecessor but one that surpasses it. It is hard not to be awestruck for quite some time after watching it.
Those who prefer fast action can get discouraged by the movie length alone but those who prefer to experience and enjoy the characters' portayal in all of its complexity will definitely not be disapponted.
Spoilers end here. So you are safe when you decide to read just this section. If you haven't seen the movie I highly recommend watching it. And if you haven't, I'd be grateful if you left your comment about what are your feelings about it.
Have a good day and take care
